Pastor Dan Schlensker, Secretary

Why I am happy to serve at CAN:

I am pleased to be involved in the ministry of CAN, because it is an important vehicle for carrying out the mission given to Christians by our Lord Jesus — to care for one another. CAN offers to many, an opportunity to be used by God to spread His love in tangible ways and to share the Good News of how He showed us His ultimate love by giving His Son for us.

Pastor Schlensker is a part of the Coastal Aires Barbershop Chorus and serves as the Senior Pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Stuart Nichols, Board Chairman

The decision to serve on the Board of CAN began by concurring with CAN’s Statement of Faith and General Purpose to engage in and carry on a general program of Christian-based life improvement for our community. It is my desire, as a member of the body of Christ, to contribute my time and resources to serve one another and that we are to remember the poor. I’m reminded of the words that say, ‘A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Stuart works as a real estate agent and is an active member of Calvary Chapel of the Redwoods.

Jim Buckles, Board Member

When I was approached to join the board of CAN, I only had CAN’s reputation of aiding the needy to go on. I have always been a service oriented person, wishing to help others when and where possible. As CAN’s mission is essentially a God-centered venture to help people, it coincides with my desire to serve God and His children Since my induction into CAN, I have continually been impressed with the level of commitment and care exhibited by its staff. By serving on the board, I have become aware of the amount of dedication and attention it takes to meet the regulations that CAN operates under. They have to work hard, and they do so with a smile and a good heart. It’s a good, good crew. I’m very excited about the prospects of CAN Cottages and the project’s potential to affordably house so many of Del Norte’s residents in need of adequate housing. I look forward to what the future brings to CAN, and I know that it, and its crew, will always rise to any challenge.

Jim works for the Del Norte County Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures Division. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Cal State Stanislaus, in Central California. Although he grew up in Los Angeles, and has been living in Del Norte for nearly thirty years and is happy to be living in one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.

Melody Morrison, Board Member

Serving on the Board is a way I can volunteer my time for a worthy cause, since I work during the week. I believe if we all pitched-in and volunteered our time, talent, or money to organizations such as CAN we could take care of each other and not rely on the government. I have worked with CAN as a volunteer for about 15 years, whether in the food bank warehouse, making calls to people at-risk of becoming homeless, or on the Board of Directors.

Melody was born and raised in Washington state. Her father is retired Highway Patrol and mom stayed home with the kids. She and her husband, Jeff, have been married 24 years. They have two kids, aged 21 and 20. They have lived in Crescent City for 16 years. Melody attends Church of the Nazarene, where she sits on their Board, and is the church Treasurer. She has also been the church Secretary. Currently working for Dr. Steve Inouye as his receptionist, she has been there for 10 years. Melody loves to travel, camp, work in the yard and plant flowers for the summertime.
