| Description: | The Community Assistance Network (CAN) food bank has served as Del Norte County’s largest supplier of emergency food for nearly 14 years, but is presently suffering from diminished funding, and is at risk of greatly reducing services and consequent employment. The food bank annually distributes over 250 tons of nutritious food to nearly 20% (approx. 4,500 individuals) of the Del Norte population, through more than 21,000 service events (direct contacts or distributions to individuals), conducted at multiple locations throughout the county. The food bank also distributes product to local partner agencies who in turn distribute to their target populations. The requested Recovery Act funds, accessed via subcontract with the Del Norte Senior Center, will allow the CAN food bank to retain not only its present level of services, but at least three (3) of the full-time-equivalent jobs which accommodate such service provision. |
